About South Island - Marlborough and Nelson

It may have been Marlborough’s Sauvignon Blanc that first put the region on the map, but there is more than just wine to woo visitors to this beautiful part of the country. As one of New Zealand’s prettiest regions, rolling green hills dotted with vineyards flow down onto a stunning coast and breathtaking natural attractions, such as the famous Marlborough Sounds. A portion of the Sounds are working farms due to the high concentration of salmon and mussels and taking advantage of this, mussel cruises offer the perfect combination of the freshest seafood, served alongside some of the region’s classic Sauvignon Blanc wines. Alternatively, a boat trip out to the Tui Nature Reserve includes a conservation tour on the reserve’s hectares of national trust land, where you can see endemic species such as the Blue Penguin and Fluttering Shearwaters. The reserve is packed with walking trails, long sheltered inlets and some lodge-style accommodation. To truly get away from it all, take a single or multi-day hike along the scenic Queen Charlotte Track.

The South Island’s oldest city, Nelson, is a popular destination with Abel Tasman National Park and for its picturesque location and pleasant climate. A community of artists have created a vibrant and infectious atmosphere in Nelson, that earns the town the reputation of ‘Jewel of the South’.

Let’s be honest, most people will come to this region for the wine, and rest assured, it won’t disappoint! With more hours of sunshine that anywhere in the country, Marlborough’s idyllic vineyards recipe in the shade of the Richmond Range with wineries dotting the banks of the Wairau River. Most offer excellent tours as well as gourmet restaurants and even some fantastic accommodation.
